Good intentions...

What a week.  So much for making plans and having a sense of direction. I am not sure where the week actually went in total but my studio time was compromised and hence I have still so much to do. Of the nine boards cut in order to paint I have still one to go. This means that I am going to have to really push to get onto a different facet of this project if I am going to make good on previous discussions with tutors.

Basically I was down a whole day on account of re-prioritising.  It came as rather an epiphany that it was actually required of me to take time out to visit galleries and keep informed of current artworks. Also, I realised that I had to do this in order to gauge where my work was to sit in the contemporary art scene. So Wednesdays are to be my day of culture in the city. This week my partners in culture were Sophie and Sally.  We visited the City Art Centre, Talbot Rice and the Museum of Scotland on Chamber Street before going to the Odeon on Lothian Road to see a showing of 'The King's Speech'.  It was such fun and so lovely not too feel guilty about having a day which I would otherwise have viewed as self-indulgence.

Of particular note is the work of Lizzie Farey - willow works and James W Cumming - painting. 'The Hebrideans' was particularly inspiring.

The exhibit of Rosemarie Trockel left me cold however.  While her practice of treating prime material as fully reconciled work gives food for thought I could not help but look for something more.  Her very feminist, anti-machismo stance also seemed to me a bit tired.

The film on the other hand was marvellous. The use of space in order to punctuate social constraints and personal issues was particularly satisfying.

Two afternoons cut short in order to attend East Lothian Outdoors official opening at new premises and to take Rhona shopping also ate into painting time. As did having to be home for the gasman - again!

Lots to do next week!

Three Levels. Incomplete - some of it works, other bits still unresolved.
