Work in Progress

Great excitement as I have been asked to take part in a group exhibit in a gallery in Morningside, Edinburgh. This has galvanised me and if I was working before I am beavering away now. Not only have I been working on material to return to ECA with, but now I have to fashion five new paintings.

I have decided to do a second series of Edinburgh Old Town paintings given the success of the first lot and the fact that I have already four up to a certain level and only need to invent a fifth. This way I also get to practice the painting style which I was happy with before.

Still very much work in progress but I would say I am happy with three out of the five.

I have also been looking at a couple of areas of research and developing them. One of these is texture - corrugated iron - wonderful! This is a piece I will take into uni with a view of doing further work. This piece is on paper. Strips of coloured paper were glued on initially to give compositional and colour guidance. As the paint was applied, the layers give texture and depth.

Last but not least I am scratching another itch. This time it is the use of material to build up texture. I have taken a large piece of canvas and hand sewn strips of cloth to it. I have painted on top, layering the paint with pieces of tissue paper and other random cloth to get a sense of depth with the texture. The subject matter is one of my drawings of the garden taken from the conservatory window.

The canvas has not been stretched so buckles in places. I am currently working on a smaller piece where the canvas has been glued to a board. The techniques used in the one below will be repeated to see what comes of it. Again the subject matter is the view of the garden.
